Cell Phones & SmartPhones: How to Clean & Disinfect

In our digital day and age, staggering amounts of people are using smartphones daily and many of us use them throughout the day to talk, text, and browse the web. (Chances are, you may have booked your Austin house cleaning appointment using a mobile device!) Some people even claim to have a certain separation anxiety from their phones and avoid being disconnected at all costs, so it’s not a surprise that with this amount of us, phones have about 18 times more bacteria than even a toilet handle! These germs transfer to our hands, faces, and surfaces where we place our phones. Follow these helpful tips from your local Austin house cleaning company and keep your phone squeaky clean!

Remember: Before cleaning your phone, unplug it from any cords or charges and turn it off. Remove the battery if you are able. The key is to be gentle with your phone’s delicate parts.

Use a Microfiber Cloth Like with eyeglasses, you can clean the smudges and oils from your fingers off your cell phone with a microfiber cloth.

Note: do not use an abrasive cloth like a wash rag or paper towel, as this can damage the screen on your phone.

  • Dampen one section of the cloth with water. Do not place water directly onto your phone, as tiny droplets of water can easily get into the small crevices of your phone and damage or ruin your phone’s components.
  • Wipe the phone with the dampened cloth in small circles
  • Use the dry section of the cloth to remove the water and moisture from your phone.

Use a Q-Tip to remove dust, crumbs, oils, and debris from between your key and around buttons.

  • Gently brush off any larger debris.
  • Using either end of your Q-tip, slowly wipe around each button, key, and crevice of your phone.
  • If the cotton is worn down, do not use – the plastic underneath may scratch or damage your phone’s screen.

Use distilled water and white vinegar to disinfect and clean your phone. Vinegar is a multi-faceted substance, from pickling to cleaning, vinegar can do almost anything. Use a couple of drops of vinegar to help clean the grime and oil from your phone.

  • Dampen a microfiber (or soft, non-abrasive, and lint-free cotton cloth) with a mixture of 50% vinegar and 50% distilled water
  • Gently rub the screen and other components of your phone with the damn cloth, avoiding charging ports and speakers.
  • Gently wipe excess moisture away with a dry cloth.

Following these tips will help keep your phone screen clean and germ-free! Happy cleaning from your friends at
