Here’s the Right Way to Clean Granite | Austin Home Cleaning

Granite is a beautiful choice for clean homes in Austin – it’s also an expensive choice, so you want to be sure you take proper care of it! Granite is scratch-resistant and heat-resistant – and it’s really easy to clean, if you do it the right way!

The best way to take care of your granite floors or counter tops is to prevent damage before it can even occur. Even with its heat- and scratch-resistant properties, it’s a very good idea to coasters, trivets, pot holders, and cutting boards. If you have granite in your bathroom, place a tray or mat under cosmetic products and put rugs down in places that are likely to get misted or dripped on.

When it comes to cleaning, water and a soft cloth are usually sufficient for daily care of counters. If the water that comes out of your faucet is high in chlorine or other minerals, it’s a good idea to use distilled water instead. Be sure to dry the surface right away, so as to prevent water spots from forming on the granite. For granite floors, dust-mopping should be enough for every day cleaning – this will pick up dirt and dust that could cause scratches or marks. For stubborn marks on your floor, mop with hot water.

Once in a while, it’s good to clean your granite surfaces with a little more oomph. All you need is water and a pH-neutral liquid dish soap. You can also use hydrogen peroxide (only on light-colored granite) or acetone (only on dark-colored granite). Be sure to rinse with clear water and dry afterward. Be sure to never use vinegar on granite, as it can etch and dull your stone’s nice finish. Try especially hard to keep other acidic things, such as citrus and wine, off your granite as well.

If a stain happens to form on your granite, use a poultice to remove it. You can purchase one, or you can mix one yourself: For oily stains, combine baking soda or whiting powder with water or rubbing alcohol until you get a paste with a peanut butter-like consistency. For water-based stains, mix baking soda or whiting powder with hydrogen peroxide (for light granite) or acetone (dark granite), shooting for the same consistency. Dampen the area with the stain and apply the poultice, then let it dry completely – this may take a day or two. Then remove the dry mixture, rinse the area, and dry it off.

Polishing granite floors is not recommended by your ATX maid service, because it can make the floor extremely slippery. But if you want to polish your granite counters, there are three options: you can dampen the surface and polish with a chamois; you can mix a quarter cup of baking soda with three cups of water and apply sparingly with a sponge, then buff with a chamois; or you can combine one part rubbing alcohol, three parts water, and a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap, apply the mixture with a spray bottle, and wipe away with a soft cloth.
